The K.R.E society’s Karnatak College was started in the year 1970 by the visionaries to help the students of Hyderabad Karnataka region, which was backward in all aspect. The primary aim was to import a quality education to the students of Bidar district. Initially only commerce department was established and later Arts, and science, departments were added. English was introduced as a second language.

 

“The department deals with largest number of students with well qualified staff. The college has a separate department with well equipped language lab and this language lab was established in 2008. The lab was first in H.K… Regions under Gulbarga University, The language lab is a new concept for students, in this language lab, students are introduced to new techniques of learning communication skills. The students are not only given training in conversational English with emphasis in natural situations both academic and everyday usage in. English, but also in elements of English pronunciation like basic sounds, stress, punctuation, intonation which are very important to natural sounding speech. The goal is not only on fluency but also on clear as well as effective communication; the department started the PG courses in 2013. The dept offers the courses in Basic Eng, Additional Eng and optional English. The department conducted terms courses like certificate / Diploma / Advanced courses on communications skills. These courses are helpful the students in learning English language through audio visual methods like conversation, situational exercise and group discussions.

 

The dept regularly conducts remedial classes for the students who are weak in English, Here, we do ensure teaching on grammar & communication skills. These remedial classes are of great help especially for the students who are from rural backgrounds other than English speaking.

The department always encourages the students to participate actively in seminar. They present papers on the topics that are related to the language of this curriculum. Workshops are conducted to sensitize to the listening skills. Hence, periodically academic experts are invited as Resource Persons from various disciplines.

 

Familiarize the teachers with latest trends in teaching English language. The department staff U.S Patil has edited books and they have been prescribed as text books for UG to deliver lectures. The department organized several guest series by inviting many eminent professors. as Resource persons from the neighboring states to courses like BA/B.Sc/B.Com/BCA by G.U.K from 2013-14 to 2017-18. To strengthen the English and sharpen the sensibility of the students to the English language and literature, the department has been availing itself of the service of the most experienced senior teachers.

Objectives & Programmes Offered

Objectives of Department of English 

  1. Enabling students to master the four basic language skills in the context of varied functions of communication and genres.
    2.  Training students to carry out critical analyses of linguistic and literary texts and to place them in their historical, philosophical, cultural, social, and global context.
  2. Providing students with a solid knowledge and understanding of English prose, poetry, fiction, and drama.
    4. Helping students acquire a sound understanding of major schools of language and literary criticism.
      5. Training students in doing academic research in accordance with standard research methodology with emphasis on creativity, and integrity.
      6. Helping students understand and relate to other cultures.
      7. Preparing students for employment in a competitive local and global market.
      8. Developing the students' transferable, practical, and professional skills  necessary for success in their future studies and in their careers.
      9. Providing students with the tools needed to access knowledge in their field of interest.
  3. Recruiting highly qualified faculty members who are dedicated to excellence in teaching and research.
